Description
About SS-31
SS-31 is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide built on an alternating aromatic-cationic motif, supplied as a lyophilised research compound. That alternating charge pattern drives selective association with cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, which is what makes this aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide a distinctive reagent for bioenergetics and redox research in vitro.
Key features of SS-31
- Mitochondria-targeted aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide (4-amino-acid)
- Sequence: D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂ (Dmt = 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine) (4 amino acids)
- Lyophilised solid — stable, easy to store, straightforward to reconstitute
- Unit size: 10 mg / vial
- Every batch released only after identity, purity, and appearance QC
- Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and batch documentation available on request

Reconstituting and storing SS-31
- Before reconstitution: Store lyophilised vials at 2–8 °C, protected from light and moisture.
- Equilibrate: Allow vial and diluent to reach room temperature before opening.
- Reconstitute: Add Bacteriostatic Water (10 ml recommended). Swirl gently — do not vortex.
- After reconstitution: Store at 2–8 °C. Prepare aliquots to minimise freeze–thaw cycles.
- Compatibility: Use only within protocols that comply with your institution’s SOPs and local regulations.

SS-31 in research
Researchers use SS-31 to examine interactions with cardiolipin-rich membrane domains, assess effects on respiratory-chain supercomplex organisation, and probe consequences for mitochondrial reactive-oxygen handling and ATP-linked metabolism. Because uptake is driven by membrane composition rather than potential, this aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide accumulates in mitochondria independently of membrane-potential collapse — useful in models where potential is already compromised.
Synthesis and quality assurance
Avanti Peptides manufactures SS-31 via controlled, validated solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) to deliver high purity and lot-to-lot consistency. Each batch undergoes identity verification, HPLC purity analysis (≥99%), and appearance inspection before release.
